Dentures are removable replacements for missing teeth and the surrounding tissues. They are typically made from acrylic resin, sometimes combined with metal attachments.

Types of Dentures:

  • Complete Dentures: These are used when all the teeth are missing. They can be either “conventional” or “immediate”. Conventional dentures are made after the teeth have been removed and the gum tissue has begun to heal, while immediate dentures are made in advance and can be positioned as soon as the teeth are removed.
  • Partial Dentures: These are used when some natural teeth remain. They consist of replacement teeth attached to a pink or gum-coloured plastic base, which is connected by a metal framework that holds the denture in place in the mouth. Partial dentures fill in the spaces created by missing teeth and prevent other teeth from changing position.

Benefits:

  • Improved Appearance: Dentures can enhance the smile and facial structure.
  • Enhanced Chewing and Speaking: Missing teeth can make chewing and speaking difficult, and dentures help restore these functions.
  • Support for Facial Muscles: Dentures support the lips and cheeks, preventing the face from sagging and maintaining a more youthful appearance.

Care and Maintenance:

  • Cleaning: Dentures should be cleaned daily to remove food particles and prevent stains.
  • Handling with Care: They should be handled carefully to avoid dropping and breaking.
  • Regular Check-ups: Regular dental check-ups are necessary to ensure proper fit and function, as gums and bones can change over time, affecting how dentures fit.

Dentures have come a long way in terms of comfort and appearance, making them a viable option for many people who have lost teeth due to injury, decay, or other health issues.
