Root Canal Therapy

Root canal therapy (Endodontics/RCT) has a bad reputation but the modern procedure is not that bad. It is needed when the nerve supply has been damaged. The nerve chamber can become infected resulting in pain and possibly the loss of the tooth unless the chamber is disinfected and sealed. It is good to be aware that a tooth which has had a root canal filling will very likely need a crown long term.

Why It’s Needed:

When the inside of your tooth (the pulp) gets infected or damaged, usually due to cavities or injury, it can cause a lot of pain and lead to serious issues.

The Procedure:

  • Numbing: The dentist numbs the area around the bad tooth so you don’t feel pain.
  • Opening the Tooth: A small hole is made in the top of the tooth to reach the infected pulp.
  • Cleaning Out: The dentist removes the infected or damaged pulp and cleans out the inside of the tooth.
  • Filling: The empty space is then filled with a special material to seal it and prevent further infection.
  • Sealing: The hole in the tooth is closed up with a temporary or permanent filling.

Afterwards:

  • Crown: Often, the tooth needs a crown (a cap) placed over it to make it strong again.
  • Care: You might feel some soreness after the procedure, but regular pain relievers can help. Avoid chewing with that tooth until it’s fully fixed.

Root canal therapy saves your tooth, stops the pain, and helps you keep chewing normally.
